The Tourism Minister of Karnataka, Sri. R.V. Deshpande inaugurated the second edition of the Karnataka Fashion Week 2014 with full support at the Bowring Institute on January 22, 2014.

Also present at the occasion was the infrastructure stalwart Mr. Ashok Kheny – Chairman – NICE,  who inaugurated the fashion week with the minister.

Showcasing a Handloom and Khadi thematic, Day 1 showed a pageantry of superbly crafted South Indian textiles. Opening with a triumphant collection revivalist designer Pavitra Muddayya that showcased Gandaberunda and Motifs like the Kannada Alphabets on the sarees. Pavitra’s mother Chimmy Nanjappa was one of India’s foremost experts in Indian Handloom Textiles and sourced exquisite hand-woven sarees from all over India for clients like Indira Gandhi & Shobhaa De at her shop VIMOR. Pavitra continues the tradition of supporting the weavers of South India.

The second designer to follow was Tara Aslam, who has a lovely store at the Bangalore Metro Station on MG Rd. She offers beautiful & inexpensive Khadi & Handloom ensembles for men and women who appreciate the finesse of the hand-made. A collection which created magic on the ramp.

It was then followed by KHADI KHOUTURE, a competition to design an ensemble out of Khadi & Handloom was held for students of the Fashion Design Schools in Bangalore. The contestants presented Khadi & Hand Woven Textiles which are used as true representations of Luxury.

The next collection on the ramp was that of VANYA SILKS OF SILK MARK, the Wild Silks of India grown in forests which has varieties of Muga, Eri (Ahimsa Silk) & Tasar – shimmering golden fabrics that are taking the International Fashion markets by storm. Vanya means Forest in Sanskrit & these silks are promoted by the Silk Mark Organization of India to ensure purity & high quality.

The next sensation on the ramp was Bangalore’s most versatile designer NAMRATA G. She has a long and distinguished career offering both Indian & Western viewpoints. She is as comfortable constructing a ball gown as she is embroidering a kanthasaree, and demonstrates the fact by offering a collection of Western evening ensembles in beautiful handlooms. Her Khadi collection was the highlight of the night with all the colors of the rainbow.

ROSHAN, the next designer, is the newest designer in the lot, who fascinated everyone with his Sufi inspired ensembles consisting of floor length angarkhas & jackets for men. He would like Indian Men to experiment more with these elegant & aristocratic silhouettes that he says flatter Indian figures most.

The next talent on the ramp was the combination of Roopa Pemmaraju and Sudhir Swain, who call themselves CALANTHA, who presented an Ethical Collection of fashion that combines traditional dyeing practices like Bandhini & printing techniques like Kalamkari to offer an Indian viewpoint in Global Fashion.

The first International Designer to showcase at the KFW 14 was the iconic BIBI RUSSELL. This distinguished designer from Bangladesh has been nominated as one of the world’s ten most important women in fashion. Her revivalist work in the handloom sector in Bangladesh reinvented this humble fabric, modernizing it and making it an international sensation. She supports entire villages of weavers, dyers, printers and tailors & crafts people.

RAJ SHROFF one of Bangalore's most respected designers, did the Finale of Day 1 and ended the night with his spectacular creations. He is known for his sensitive use of natural fabric & techniques, texturized surfaces & embellishments add a dimension to his collection that truly make a statement about the beauty of Indian textiles.

Also gracing the occasion were Mr. Sridhar Pabisetty and Mr. Harish Bijoor from B.PAC, who explained the vision and objectives of this Political Action Committee.

Day 2 focusses on Bridal Wear followed by Global Pret on Day 3.
